A Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research project lecture titled “Russia’s Arctic Indigenous Literatures in Ecocritical and Postcolonial Perspective” will be held jointly with this center. The lecture will be held in English on September 29th (Friday) from 16:30 in the large conference room of the Slavic and Eurasian Research Center. Please feel free to join us.

Russia’s long-standing exploitation of its Arctic areas has raised concerns about the future of the fragile northern environment and the severe situation of Indigenous people living the area. These themes are central to local literature that often explores human-non-human relationships and their intertwinement with colonial discourses and tropes of modernization. The lecture focuses on these questions in the literature of northern Uralic peoples such as the Sámi, the Nenets, and the Khanty, written in late 20th and early 21st century.
